This is a really interesting read!
I’d expected something like this would have to happen, to rebuild habitations out of a wasteland. More important than holding absolute dominion is making sure all settlements are interconnected and accessible, so their resources can be accessed as needed.
It reminds me a lot of the history behind Sargon of Akkad and the Akkadian Empire, when he had to conquer and connect Anatolia (for metals), the Indus Valley (for precious stones), and the Persian Gulf (for timber and maritime travel) into one so all could be made a single body.
except more technologically advanced, obviously, as here they have the means for railroads and steam engines.
The view of the deep crater in the planet, against starry backdrop and the white planet looks really cool! Very alien and eerie
